Texas Medicare Eligibility Requirements – Make Sure You’re Eligible

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Texas Medicare eligibility requirements are similar to other states. First and foremost, you have to learn the basics. According to all guidelines set forth by the Federal Medicare program, eligible parties must be:

-At least 65 years of age

-Under age 65 and disabled

There is a lot more to getting coverage, but as long as you meet one of these basic situations, it is a start. Once you have determined where you stand, you have more criteria to worry about. Those who are ‘aged in’ to the Medicare system need to have at least 10 years of work history in order to qualify. Otherwise, they will be required to pay for Part A coverage (which is free to eligible people) as well as Part B. Medicare Part B always carries a small premium, which is currently around $115 per month. This premium is subject to change annually, however, and there is no way to get out of paying it. If you want to get Part A for free, however, you have to have the work history to back up your enrollment. If you are over 65 and don’t have 10 years of work history, you can still get Medicare if you are willing to pay for it all.

Eligibility also varies for prescription drug coverage. Private insurance companies handle Texas Medicare Part D, or prescription plans. However, you do have to have Medicare Part A at a minimum. Some companies will also require you to have Part B, but this varies texas medicare eligibility requirementsand is usually not an issue. You will pay between $15 and $50 per month for prescription coverage as long as you are eligible, which is quite nominal compared to the costs of medication today. Part B and Part D also have something in common in that there are penalties for people who don’t enroll as soon as they are eligible.

The best way to check your Texas Medicare eligibility requirements and get the coverage that you need is to find an independent insurance agent who can help you through the process. Not only will they know the rules and understand Texas Medicare eligibility requirements, but they will be able to guide you in making the best choices for your insurance needs. You should also verify your enrollment a couple of months in advance with the social security office and consider supplemental coverage because Medicare itself is not going to cover everything.
